And One for Good Luck

Shalom! Today is our Keeping It Sacred community 3rd birthday- do something to celebrate yourself! On our cake would be 3 candles plus one for good luck-- I always appreciated that extra "one for good luck" candle. An extra blessing for goodness and the promise of good things to come in the year ahead. Mazal Tov literally, actually, translates to "good luck"-- (mazal meaning "luck" and tov meaning "good").

In Jewish tradition "mazal" is a kind of luck or force that exists in the universe. Something that we cannot see but that is a very real phenomenon. Kind of like electricity or magnetic pull, gravity or radio waves. This mazal can be good or bad, like good or bad luck. So, when something good happens, we name it as "good luck!"

Certainly, I want to take the time to name the good luck we have had as a wonderful community over the past three years. Beginning with Torah study at the core and other joyful nerdy pursuits, moving into pastoral care and community building, then holy days observances, and now, our Family Education program (taking what we do so well with learning and applying it to family life). We have also just today published our new KITS Code of Ethics.

This is an initiative encouraged by the Union for Reform Judaism to all member communities. We are among the first communities to create and adapt one! I believe this is an important step in creating communities built up by and for our membership. This is what helps us keep to a standard of wellness for all members, staff, and partners. Many thanks to beloved KITS community members, Dr. David Aronson (chair), Sheryl Aronson, and Wendy Stiver for their dedication to helping us concretize the values we espouse.
