Global Connections

Updated: Jul 29

Newsletter July 20th, 2025. Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

"No way!"

"What are the chances?"

"Bingo!! I’ll connect you... now"

"I have goosebumps!

This is a transcript right from a text conversation I had this past weekend with one of our awesome members, Kim. You may remember that she recently moved to be with her new wife, Stacy and family in Canada. So, when I heard another of our families had just moved there, I reached out to her to see if she’d like to connect.

Of course she would (because our KITS community is awesome) and when I shared more about who they were, we put two and two together… and they had actually JUST met at a PRIDE BBQ the week before and totally had a whole awesome discussion about design and kids and LA and life and Canada!

Hence, the text chain:

Me: "No way!"

Kim: "What are the chances?"

Me: "Bingo!! I’ll connect you... now"

Kim: "I have goosebumps!"

How great is it that our KITS community connects all over the world like this. That likeminded and progressive folks find one another and can have great conversations on a couch in Toronto, each having just moved from Los Angeles. And that we are all making the world feel closer and more connected.

This is the feeling that we encourage at KITS. It’s that feeling that the beautiful halftime show at the World Cup yesterday or at the end huddle by members of each team after the match Saturday- the message of love and unity and camaraderie. The message of connection across geography. Across political borders. Shared love of soccer there. But more than that- shared love of humanity.

And that google commercial showing how soccer is loved by 3.5 billion people across the globe cutting to different people playing it in their different and unique contexts. I love that stuff.

When I set out to build Keeping It Sacred, my heart told me that there were others out there hungering for this type of community. This type of connection through community. Not just a surface connection either. Not performative. But real and deep. Appreciation for one another. The kind of connection that inspires goosebumps. Like that true feeling that this is how humanity should interact.

At KITS, we have a shared love of the Jewish values that honor open, warm, loving, compassionate and yes, nerdy, spaces that celebrate diversity.

In fact later this month, we will celebrate our diversity with an International Panel of our members - just a few to start, from England, Italy, and Mauritius, to share what Jewish life is like there, and to connect further. I heartily invite you to attend. (RSVP HERE and below).

In a world where some (even leaders, for shame!) would try to make us believe that differences are to be feared and would like to see us divided, we transcend and unite and share and honor and connect.

And it tickles me to know that we are making this all a reality. Through our global connections, we are keeping it sacred.

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred

TISHA B'AV JEWISH RITUAL IN SOLIDARITY WITH IMMIGRANTS

Join us on Thursday, July 23rd at 12:00pm in Downtown LA for our 4th annual Tisha B'Av action and community gathering. On this saddest day of the Jewish calendar, let's use the moment to mourn the destruction enacted on our communities by ICE, and the cruelty and inhumanity of the detention and deportation machine. We invite Jews and allies throughout our communities to join our local immigrant partners on July 23rd. Through prayers, testimony and action, we will raise our moral voices against the government’s oppressive disappearances, detentions and deportations, and together help rebuild a better world of sanctuary and justice! RSVP at Cluejustice.org/tishabav26

KITS CREATIVITY CLUB

JULY 26TH - 9AM PT/12PM ET – Calling all creative people and people who want to create! Enjoy a chance to hang out with other Keeping It Sacred community members, get to know each other better.

The KITS Creativity Club will meet on July 26, 2026 at 9 am Pacific. We will continue to share stories about our journeys as creatives. Our first session was a wonderfully rich time of learning about each others’ talents and dreams: some of us are composers, some are poets and novelists, others are photographers. Please bring an example of your art on the 26th, such as a drawing, a knitting creation, a song, or whatever you can share.

WELCOME ZOEY ESTELLE!

The entire Keeping It Sacred global community extends a hearty Mazal Tov to Matt & Izzy, who were married by Rabbi Miller last year, on the recent birth of their daughter, Zoey Estelle. May they experience ever deepening bonds of love as a family as they nurture Zoey’s wonder of the world around her. They have been doing so diligently already and are exhausted but also utterly in love. We welcome you to the world, Zoey, and welcome to parenthood, Izzy and Matt!

SACRED PRIVACY IN THE AGE OF AI:

A JEWISH ETHICAL PERSPECTIVE

AUGUST 3RD, 11AM PT/2PM ET – Artificial intelligence is changing how we communicate, learn, worship, and care for one another. But as technology becomes more powerful, what happens to privacy, trust, and human dignity?

Jewish tradition has long understood that protecting another person's inner life is a sacred responsibility. In this timely and accessible class, we'll explore how enduring Jewish wisdom can help us navigate the ethical questions raised by AI.

How do we give meaningful consent when we don't fully understand what we're agreeing to? What makes a conversation truly confidential? When does convenience come at the expense of privacy? How do we preserve truth and trust in an age of deepfakes and AI-generated content? What responsibilities do clergy and congregations have to safeguard personal information? And how can we ensure that new technologies honor the dignity and uniqueness of every human being?

Whether you're curious, concerned, or already using AI every day, this conversation offers practical tools and timeless wisdom for navigating our rapidly changing world. No technical background is needed—just curiosity and a willingness to explore how Jewish ethics can help us use technology in ways that deepen, rather than diminish, our humanity.

INTERNATIONAL PANEL: A CONVERSATION ACROSS CONTINENTS

AUGUST 6TH - 9AM PT/12PM ET – What does Jewish life look like around the world? Join Keeping It Sacred for a special conversation featuring members of our international community as they share their lived experiences of Jewish life, culture, and community in the places they call home.

Meet our panelists:

  • Corinne from Mauritius, an island nation in the Indian Ocean, who believes, “We are all connected and each person matters. I embrace diversity in Judaism.”

  • Alpie from Italy, who will share insights into Jewish life, history, and community in one of Europe’s oldest centers of Jewish tradition.

  • Erin, Matthew and Alex from England, who will offer perspectives on contemporary Jewish life in the United Kingdom.

Together we’ll explore how geography, culture, local traditions, and community shape Jewish identity while discovering the shared values that connect Jews across the globe. There will also be time for audience questions.

Whether you’re curious about Jewish communities around the world or simply looking to connect with fellow learners, we invite you to join this meaningful conversation.

RE(SOUL)UTIONS: A PRACTICAL GUIDE FOR SELF-REPAIR

AUGUST 26TH - 11AM PT/2PM ET – What if the work of becoming your best self didn't begin with fixing what's wrong—but with rediscovering the wisdom already within you? Based on Rabbi Heather Miller's book RE(SOUL)UTIONS: A Practical Guide for Self-Repair, this class offers a thoughtful and accessible journey of reflection, renewal, and personal growth. Drawing on timeless Jewish teachings, we'll explore how ancient wisdom can help us navigate modern challenges with greater intention, resilience, and compassion.

Together we'll consider questions that invite meaningful change: How do we let go of habits that no longer serve us? How do we repair relationships—with ourselves, with others, and with the world? What does it mean to live with purpose, gratitude, forgiveness, and hope? And how can small, intentional practices create lasting transformation?

HAVE YOU HEARD?

Here's more from our beloved KITS member, and amazing disability rights advocate Wendy Stiver this month:

The theme for Disability Pride Month 2026 is "The World Works Better with Us:" That means ALL of us, in our wheelchairs, wearing our adult briefs aka diapers, with our neurodivergent brains, our noninvasive ventilators, our service dogs, caregivers, and our innumerable talents and skills.

My social media has been receiving many short videos created by people with disabilities, sharing their stories, coming out of the closet, created by our physical isolation, fear, shame, and acknowledging that some days are harder than others. I also am receiving posts from disability advocacy groups urging us to protest the actions of the current administration, which threaten our rights. The message is clear: disability is political. We won't go back, and we won't be quiet.

Cuts to Medicare and Medicaid undermine our ability to access in-home care. The Administration plans to cut the Administration for Community Living, which is the backbone for our national network of centers for independent living. Not to mention cuts to staffing at key government agencies such as Social Security and the Department of Education.

We are 1 in 4 humans in this country: we are powerful when we come together and use our voices. Disability activism and disability justice align with principles of Jewish social justice.

In our next article, we will provide links to resources and organizations vital to disability activism. And for more on information in this article, see THIS article.

We'd love to know what exciting things KITS folks are doing! Writers, researchers, composers, artists--we want to hear from you!! Please contact Wendy at srwendystiver@gmail.com and let's share about all the great things we are publishing, accomplishing, and celebrating.

JOIN OUR KEEPING IT SACRED MAP!

One of our favorite things we've ever done as a community is our Postcard Project—and so many of you have asked if we could bring it back!

The first time around, members from all over the world printed our purple postcard, took photos of themselves holding it in places that were special to them, and sent those photos back to us. We printed every single one and added them to our physical world map. Seeing our community represented across so many cities, states, and countries was incredibly special.

Here's how to participate:

Step 1: Download the postcard by using the image above or emailing Molly at mflanagan@keeping.com for a pdf/png version. We have both a purple version (if you have access to a color printer) and a black-and-white version if that's easier.

Step 2: Write your location along the bottom of the postcard.

Step 3: Take a horizontal (landscape) photo of yourself holding the postcard somewhere meaningful or iconic in your area. It could be a favorite local landmark, a beautiful view, your town square, a beach, a mountain, or anywhere that represents where you are.

Step 4: Text or email your photo to me at mflanagan@keepingitsacred.com, and I'll print it and add it to our community world map!

I can't wait to see where everyone is checking in from. Watching our map fill with faces and places from around the world is such a beautiful reminder that, even though we're spread across different locations, we're all part of the same community.

Let's fill the map together!

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

JOIN our healing circle EVERY THURSDAY at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET holding space for all looking for prayers for healing.

Please note that this weeks (7/23) Healing Circle and Talmud for All! have been postponed to next week.

Immediately following that: at 11am PT/2pm ET, join us as we jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old. We enjoy studying a page of Talmud every day and reviewing together every Thursday, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. We enjoy participation from participants across the world who span the spectrum of race, gender, class, age, and connection to Jewish thought.

The rabbis could never have imagined such a wonderful group considering their thoughts!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."

To join, please register HERE. And look for us on Instagram HERE.
