Go To Yourself

What happens when you decide to chart your own path? What happens when you decide to lift your head out of the ocean of expectations the world has for you and you direct your own course? What happens?

When anyone does this, they thrive. Now, it's not easy at first. Certainly. But, it creates the deepest sense of satisfaction and purpose.

I think part of it is that when a person follows that still small voice within themselves telling them who they are and what the next right step is, they feel self-worth because they are choosing themselves. They are nurturing that inner part of who they are rather than neglecting it or silencing it. And, when you find ways to love yourself, good things happen. Call these good things "blessings," if you will.

Certainly, in this week's Torah portion, Lech Lecha, God tells Abram that he will receive blessings if he follows his own path. Lech Lecha is literally a directive to "go to yourself!" And Abram did just that, and in turn, received great blessings. He left his father's home and the land that he loved to find himself, and he merited God's best blessings including becoming as numerous as the stars in the sky. The Torah is teaching us that good things come from finding and following ourselves.

There are so many ways we can begin to express our best selves; our most authentic selves. This can happen in big ways, like when people come out as queer (October 11 was national coming out day!). But also in other smaller ways like when we simply express what we want to have for dinner instead of saying, "I'll have whatever you're interested in having." Or perhaps, choosing a job of our passion rather than the job with the highest yearly income.

When we honor who we are at our core, when we go to ourselves, we enjoy relationships based on authenticity and build futures for ourselves that have deeper purpose.

It is fitting that this second week of the new Torah cycle, right after praising creation, we are told essentially, "now that you have been created, go find yourself." So, will you take a moment today or some dedicated time this week to check in with yourself? What is working for you? How can you honor that still, small voice inside you calling you to your full potential?
