Newsletter April 13th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...
I thought I knew a lot about the persecution of Jews throughout history. My own family feverishly fled the pogroms in Russia, my great grandmother even lying down with dead bodies on the frozen street to escape being killed herself. I went to a Jewish day school we learned about WWII and commemorated the Holocaust yearly. In youth group we went to see Schindler’s List in the theatre. In college, I majored in Peace and Justice Studies with a focus on Jewish History and studied, for years, about all of the groups who sought to annihilate us, culminating in an entire seminar class on Antisemitism in Historical Perspective.
But last month, when I participated in the Jewish walking tour of San Francisco during the CCAR Rabbi’s convention, I stood at Pink Triangle Memorial in the Castro (photograph of the rose quartz stones placed there to remember) and learned that the way the queer community was persecuted in Nazi Germany differed based on gender. I had long known of the pink triangle gay men were to wear to identify them as such, but I didn’t know of the black triangle lesbians and queer women were identified with. These women (and others) were labelled as “asocial.” For a resource on this please watch THIS video by the Museum of Jewish Heritage.
This is surprising and not surprising all at once. Surprising because I had never heard of this history. But utterly unsurprising as I have long known that persecution and oppression a person experiences is based on a person’s intersecting identities. Women who were queer are prosecuted differently than men who were queer or women who were not queer. And if they are also political dissidents, of a non-Aryan race, Jewish or disabled, or an amalgamation of these or any other targeted group? They would be treated uniquely according to those intersections of identity.
Not all persecution is expressed in the same way. And none should be categorized as worse or better than the other—I’m firmly against the Oppression Olympics (for a great book about the Oppression Olympics, by the way, check out THIS work by Professor Ange-Marie Hancock). But these histories are important to share. These experiences each matter in their uniqueness. And to understand them and their idiosyncratic insidiousness helps us think about how to prevent them in their broad diversity.
April 14 is Yom HaShoah and next Monday, April 20, marks Lesbian Visibility Day. Let’s make time to learn more about the experience of all who were murdered or uprooted during the holocaust in all of their particularities of the experiences, and vow to never again let the basement of humanity occur for anyone.
Standing on the side of human dignity in all the ways it is threatened is how we’re keeping it sacred.

MESSAGE FROM THE KITS SOCIAL ACTION IN LOS ANGELES CLUB
THOUGHTS ON YOM HASHOAH
Tonight, April 13th, marks the start of Yom HaShoah-- Holocaust Remembrance Day, literally the Day of the Catastrophe. It is a day on which we commemorate the murder of 6 million Jews by the Nazis, the forces that wanted to eradicate us, and Jewish culture, from the face of the Earth.
Yom HaShoah reminds us that we must never forget. And it is worth thinking about what it means, never to forget. The phrase so familiar to us as Jews might be considered narrowly-- that we must never forget the 6 million of us who were killed-- in much the way people who say "remember the Alamo" refer specifically to the Alamo -- as an act of remembrance to recall the event and to honor the dead. It is also a day to honor all who were targets of Nazi hatred and violence including (in their terms) anyone not of the Aryan race, political dissidents, homosexuals and asocial women, the Roma people, Jehovah’s witnesses, the disabled, Soviets, and others.
But we don't just say "never forget." We also say "never again." Yom HaShoah helps us to remember that we must never let "that" happen to us Jews or anyone else targeted again.
It is our job to make sure we resist the genocidal urges of all those who threaten or attempt to wipe out any entire group of people or religion or culture or civilization.
In international law, for acts to be considered "genocidal," rather than "mere" killing, there must be an aggressor who communicates its intent to exterminate an entire people, to eradicate them for all time, to rid the world of their very history. The danger this seeks to address is "language not only describes reality -- it shapes it.” A recent article by Rabbi Jeffrey Salkin stresses that the very language of intent, even without the destructive acts, does its own profound harm (he uses the recent genocidal language expressed as an example). Such rhetoric conditions us to forget the humanity of others by labelling them as “enemy,” and promotes the idea that their lives mean less than ours do, that killing their children is more acceptable than killing our own, that their very way of life poses a threat to our own. Antisemitic rants over the course of time conditioned people who led normal, ordinary, "civilized" lives to be able to commit unspeakable acts. It began with othering.
So on this Yom HaShoah, may we commit ourselves to supporting those people here and around the globe who are the current victims of genocide, and to expressly resisting the use of genocidal language, from all sources, directed at any people -- language designed to besmirch, to de-humanize, to other. Never forget, never again.
COUNT THE OMER WITH US!
This is the last week to join our social media platforms: Instagram and Facebook, to follow along with counting the Omer, a tradition that continues for 49 days. The counting of the omer was once a harvest season ritual that was adopted by the Kabbalists who infused a spirituality and intentionality into the practice. Check out our social media daily for seven weeks of seven days of readings, and meditative prompts to spark introspection and spiritual strength. This custom traditionally links the second night of Passover with Shavuot (day 50!). Join us in this spiritual exercise as we climb up from oppression to the celebration of the giving of the Torah.
SUPPORT THE LAUSD STRIKES
Along with our partners at CLUE, our KITS SAIL Club (Social Action in LA) is looking to support teachers next week. Email Rabbi Miller for details to coordinate with our community. Here’s info about the strike from CLUE: After a long struggle with LAUSD, unionized teachers (UTLA) and SEIU 99 education workers at LAUSD voted last month to go on an open-ended strike to get a fair contract.LAUSD workers’ salaries have lagged behind inflation over the past 10 years. Indeed 21% qualify for low-income housing and other county assistance. The average salary of LAUSD workers is $35,000/year. Many are unhoused because of their poverty wages. Meanwhile, students are suffering from crowded classrooms and lack of investment for student mental health support, Special Needs, Art and Physical Education despite LAUSD having more than $5 billion in reserves, with more to come from the state. As SEIU 99 Executive Director, Max Arias, emphasized, the district does not have a budget problem—it has a priority problem. This contract fight is about the wellbeing of our children, community, and schools. There is no healthy learning environment for our children at LAUSD without hard-working staff.It’s time for us to show up for LAUSD staff as they have shown up to drive, feed, educate, and keep our children safe. Adopt a Picket Line Starting Tue, 4/14: As teachers walk out on this upcoming Tuesday, you and/or your congregation can join them and “adopt a picket” for a day or more.
Just pick a school near you or your congregation and join workers on the picket line from 7 am - 9 am.
Bring coffee, water, or snacks to share.
If you can have your congregation or home open so teachers can use the bathroom and rest, even better!
Join a weekly rally at 10:30 AM at these locations:
Tues, April 14 – Grand Park in front of LA City Hall
Wed, April 15 – March from Grand Park to LAUSD Headquarters
Thurs, April 16 – LAUSD District Offices
Fri, April 17 – Grand Park in front of LA City Hall
Call and Email LAUSD School Board Members and demand that the district provide a living wage for teachers and staff and invest in safe schools and student wellness.
All of this is subject to the news from the labor unions that continue to negotiate.

SPIRITUAL GENTLENESS BOOK CLUB
TODAY - APRIL 13TH 4PM PT/7PM ET – Are you interested in holding spiritual space for healing through reading and community? Then please consider joining our KITS Spiritual Gentleness Book Club (SGBC) led by members Ashleigh and Tracy. The SGBC explore books in monthly meetings, with topics and discussions centered on the questions that arise for those who are new to Judaism. With a collaborative approach to book discussion, we envision this book club as a place to make new friends, have nuanced and meaningful discussions, and deepen our relationships with Judaism. During our next meeting, we will reserve the first half for final thoughts on Heart of A Stranger. HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO WORK IN COALITION, EVEN WHEN WE ARE IN DISAGREEMENT?
In 2024 & 2025, a Black/Jewish/Black & Jewish cohort called "Bridging Histories" gathered monthly at the Skirball Center to break bread together and grapple with the state of our coalition.
One of the richest discoveries that was made during our time together was the importance of The Bradley Coalition in our local history - the strong Black/Jewish alliance that voted Bradley in as mayor, and how that coalition ultimately dissolved. In a time where the Middle East continues to drive a wedge through vital alliance spaces, we see the study of this coalition as a way for us to identify and alchemize the learnings of the solidarity spaces that came before us. Our goal is to find new ways into the question: How do we continue to work in coalition, even when we are in disagreement?
Save the date: Sunday May 17th 2pm-4pm PT in-person for the first of four community gatherings to hear from those who were on the ground during that time.
There are many of us here in Los Angeles who have been leaning into one another, engaging in courageous conversations centered in curiosity and hope. Let’s all gather for this offering, so we can see and feel our numbers while we learn together.
You do not have to be Black or Jewish (or both) to engage with this conversation. This is open to the public and is relevant to anyone curious about coalition building, so please feel free to forward to anyone in your life who is craving community around this subject (though no posting on socials please).
