In the secular new year, there’s a tradition where people do on New Year’s Day what they hope to do for the rest of the year.
For many, that’s gathering with family and friends, and doing acts of care for the world. I love this tradition and I think it’s a great practice for us to think about during the new Jewish year as well.
What are the things you want more of in the Jewish new year? What are those things that will keep us centred, and connected, and healthy, and feeling safe, and able to express our fullest selves?
Our Keeping It Sacred Creativity Club just discussed exactly that. What do we want to support more of in the new year, for ourselves and others?
Here are some of the things that they came up with, in the form of an alphabetic acrostic:
Acceptance, action, art
Beauty, balance
Creativity, community, courage
Dream, Donations, draw
Energy, empathy, encourage
Friendship, faith, forgiveness
Give, garden, grace, grow
Help, hope, happiness, honor, heart
Imagination, ideas
Justice, joy
Kindness, kinship, knowledge,
Listen, love
Mindfulness, mercy, make love, not war, music
Notice beauty, nurture
Opportunity, openness
Plant for the future, pray, positivity, poetry, paint
Q ask good questions, quality
Reality, risk, radiance
Sympathy, science
Trust, take care of others, truth
U work toward understanding, universe
Volunteer, voice, valor, victory, variety, vision
Wonder, write
Xpress feelings,
Yoga, yogurt
Zest, Zen, zeal, zines
Maybe you see here some things that you would like to have more of in the new year as well?
I invite you to start the new year off with our amazing tender-hearted community and join us for our Erev Rosh Hashanah Seder tonight, and services tomorrow, and really our entire slate of High Holy Day happenings which you can find here: Keepingitsacred.com/highholidays
This community is an incredible source of love and light in the world, and I love that we start the new year together. Truly inspires in me love of and gratitude for creation. This is how we’re keeping each and every year sacred.
This is how we’re keeping it sacred. Together, we’re #keepingitsacred...
