Navigating These Times

A funny thing is happening in Los Angeles Wednesday night. It is true that members of the Jewish community will be gathering in sacred spaces around the city to welcome in the holiest day of the year. 

But there will also be major traffic delays on the 405 freeway known as the busiest and most congested freeway in the United States. This is the season of repair work which will close up to two lanes on the major artery.

And if that wasn’t enough, the World Series Champion Dodger team will also be playing the second Wild Card game that night across town, likely congesting the other major north/south traffic artery known as Interstate 5!

So, just as members of the Jewish community will be fighting traffic to get home and get to synagogue, they will be caught in gridlock. 

Gridlock is the perfect metaphor for how many of us have felt this past year, isn’t it? So much of our time this past year has been feeling feelings of congestion and being tied up. We want things to flow and move and go. We want to get to our destination. But we have been bottlenecked and log jammed and all the other words in the thesaurus having to do with feeling stuck.

Some will not venture out, and thank goodness there are many options for people to tune in and log on to experience services online. Not just for locals but for Jews around the world. But others will brave the trek. 

No matter if you get out there or stay home, the feeling has been the same. But yet again, and on the holiest day of the year, we will try again and hope against all hope for movement. For finding our way through these days of obstruction. Through the narrow straits of our world. To do what our people has done for thousands of years and amidst all kinds of impasses— gather together and find our way through as individuals and together.  (Please don't forget to register for our programs below).

Please join us as we navigate these times together, whether online or in person. For those able to make it in person, it will definitely be worth the effort. And for those who will work hard at being able to log on, you will be included in all kinds of sacred ways as well. And together we will find our way through.
