Seeing and Being Seen

Updated: Jul 29

Newsletter March 30th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

When I lived in New York, people assumed I was a vegan from Brooklyn. In truth, I was a meat-eater who lived downtown. It always puzzled me (and still does) but I guess they thought “lesbian + progressive + rabbinical student = vegan from Brooklyn”?!

I don’t know. But I guess that’s just it. When people stereotype and try to fill in the blanks they don’t actually know about you, especially when they get it wrong, it can feel deeply alienating. Like parts of who we are are erased and dismissed, parts are emphasized, and we become painfully aware that we are some distorted image of who we truly are, in people’s minds.

That was not the first time, and it was not the last, that I have felt misunderstood. And I am sure you have felt this at some point in your life as well. You may be feeling it in your life in some context right now.

Sometimes these misunderstandings are relatively harmless. Like, in a new conversation, when someone pegs you for a Pisces when you’re really an Aquarius.

But sometimes there’s powerful, and even mortal, consequences to these kinds of misunderstandings. Like when people who don’t know the immigrant community ascribe violent and deviant caricatures to them, and they are criminalized and killed as they are hunted.

It is up to each of us to help bring the picture of who the community is into greater alignment with the truth.

Tuesday is Transgender Day of Visibility. It is a day dedicated to helping to right the misaligned understandings of the trans, nonbinary, and gender expansive communities. The varied voices of ordinary trans folks have been downplayed in media, and this is a day to lift them up.

For instance, an important nonprofit organization named Media Matters reported that the New York Times excluded the perspective of trans people from 60% of its stories about anti-trans legislation. And this was in the year following the public critique that they had excluded trans voices.

I learned that disturbing fact and was reminded of the importance of fair and accurate representations of the trans community from an excellent discussion led by Rex Wilder. (Read below for a wonderful four part workshop that they will lead with our new amazing KITS member Erin-Kate Escobar).

Rex writes:

That’s why it’s still necessary for trans people to be seen through authentic, diverse, and accurate stories which reflect the actual lived experiences of trans people; both for themselves and for the people who believe they’ve never met a trans person.

So Tuesday, and all week, or really all year, whether we identify as trans or not, let’s dedicate some time to reading trans stories from various corners of the world, across time and space. You may begin with this great resource on Transcestors (ancestors of the trans community). Or by watching Disclosure, a film on Netflix about representation of the TGX community. Or by reading more about the lived experiences of those in the TGX community (HERE’s a link an article about 6 trans elders, including our KITS activist friend, Bamby Salcedo).

Whether you're trans or not, let’s get informed and hold space for people to share their authentic selves. And, in the process, may we all find a home for each of our truths to be affirmed. Because visibility matters. And, it’s not possible for everyone to be a vegan in Brooklyn. This is how we’re keeping it sacred.

Together, we’re #keepingitsacred…

CULTIVATING OUR COLLECTIVE POWER:

TOOLS FOR COMMUNITY, CARE, & RESISTANCE

From our wonderful KITS member, Erin-Kate Escobar:

If you’ve been feeling like it’s harder and harder to be a human at work right now, you’re not imagining it. Between rising fascism, dehumanizing capitalist norms, and the pressure to “perform professionalism,” many of us are stretched beyond what’s sustainable. We need spaces that honor the truth of what we’re living through and help us remember we’re not alone.

Whether you're leading an organization through funding uncertainty, managing diverse teams in fast-paced environments, or working in tech while trying to create positive change, this series gives you concrete tools to build power with—not over—your communities.

The sessions will take place on April 16, April 23, April 30, and May 7 at 10-11:30am PST/1-2:30pm EST, online only.

If you are a leader seeking grounded strategies for navigating complex times while staying connected to your values, this series may be for you.

PASSOVER FAMILY SEDER POEM

Beloved Keeping It Sacred member, Shakina, shares an incredible Passover Seder poem that she wrote for her family seder. The poem explores beautiful themes of choice and authenticity in expressing Jewish identity. Feel welcome to share it at your Seder table, too. A gift, courtesy of Shakina.

What kind of Jew am I?

A Poem for Passover 2026

by Shakina

This is a season of questions

some big, some small

some we’ve been asking ourselves for centuries,

millennia even.

And some just come up

day to day.

This question I invite you

to contemplate in your heart

is as simple and profound

as you allow it to be:

What kind of Jew am I?

For we are all one people

with a common ancestry

spread across nations,

from generation to generation,

as we remind ourselves

again and again.

But in our shared history,

we celebrate diversity

of thought, of culture, of practice.

And every iteration

of what it means to be Jewish

keeps Judaism alive

and thriving in its variety.

We don’t always agree—

Show me a Jew who always agrees

and I’ll show you someone

who’s lying about something—

But we can and must concede

to see the common thread

that unites us in our difference.

That is why we gather

on nights like this

to tell our story of liberation,

of surviving plagues

and persecution,

to step out on faith

and follow one another

through the desert.

What kind of Jew am I?

To turn my eyes from suffering,

to allow, in my silence,

for encampments?

What kind of Jew am I

to see people driven from their homes

and say nothing?

What kind of Jew am I

to defend my rights

and not another’s?

To witness the loss

of firstborn sons and daughters?

To see any child and think

they are somehow

worth less?

Once a year, we ask forgiveness,

for the ways we’ve failed

to live up to the challenge

of loving our neighbor.

But daily may we be reminded

of the opportunity

to ask ourselves:

What kind of Jew am I?

Am I a Jew who embraces

a legacy of fighting for freedom?

Am I a Jew who remembers

the sacred duty of rest?

Am I a Jew who rejoices

in the lighting of candles,

the sharing of stories,

and food,

and spirit?

Can I be the kind of Jew

who feels capable

of persevering

when the odds seem stacked

and the leverage feels light?

A Jew who lifts burdens

who turns curses into blessings

like Ma Tovu

words we recite each morning

from one set out to slander us

who could only speak of our beauty?

As Jews we surround ourselves

with reminders of reminders

because somewhere down the line

between a golden calf

and a pillar of fire

we realized collectively

how easy it is to forget

who we are,

what we stand for,

and how, in fact, we pray.

Because asking is prayer,

not just of God

but of ourselves.

Jacob was called Israel

because he wrestled the angel

and demanded to be blessed.

So are we,

descendants of Jacob,

children of Rachel and Leah,

destined to wrestle

with the great questions of our time.

The best blessing

we can hope for—

the most righteous demand—

is to be able to answer

with intention and care

that the kind of Jew

you’ve come to be

is the one who knows

their Jewishness

from within,

and who is learning

day by day,

through remembrance and reflection,

to live that kind of Judaism

out in the world

as you keep it

alive

in your heart.

NEW PASSOVER SEDER PLATE SONG BY JOANIE LEEDS!

Happy almost Passover! Fresh off all of the GRAMMY excitement around Grammy winning artist Joanie Leeds, we share news that she has a new single out about Passover! “My Seder Plate” is out TODAY! Joanie had the joy of debuting My Seder Plate on Ms. Sara’s Passover episode last year and it was such a hit at concerts and the nursery schools that she professionally recorded it.

Also, her new mindfulness, children’s picture book, Breathe Deep, was published last month and its 1st reading was at the PJ Library Book Festival at the 92Y! Breathe Deep is now available in most places where books are sold.

Books, music and singing for kids brings endless happiness even amongst the tough moments in life. We hope this brings a smile to your face, too.

PASSOVER MESSAGE FROM THE KITS SAIL CLUB ON SOCIAL ACTION

Tomorrow night marks the beginning of Passover, the story of which has reminded Jews through the millennia that we were once strangers in a strange land, living in enslavement in Egypt until our liberation.  Our history sadly reminds us that in many places and many times since then, we have again been considered strangers, regardless of the length of our residency and the contributions we have made to the communities in which we've lived.

Passover teaches us not just to remember this history but to recognize all the people around us -- Jews and Gentiles alike --that are shunned as strangers. Through its story, it also exhorts us to act as agents for change by extending the hand of welcome to all. Symbolically, we open the door during our Seder to invite all who are hungry, to come and eat. We are enjoined not simply to give the hungry money or hand them bags of food; we are instructed to ask them to join us at our table, in our homes, to show that they are not strangers after all.

Over the years, we have recognized the categories of those in need of welcome to many: the homeless; the food insecure; the incarcerated; those who have physical and mental illnesses; those who are disrespected because of their race, ethnicity, gender, or sexual orientation. And we should continue to do so. But because this year has seen a scourge against our immigrant neighbors, let us dedicate this Passover to them, and take action to open our hearts to them in concrete ways.

To that end, during the season of Passover and the counting of the Omer, the social action committee will share actions large and small that members can take to help these sojourners in this strange --and currently hostile --land know that we feel their pain, that we value their presence, and that we will protect them in whatever ways we can.

Many of you joined the No Kings actions this past weekend- it was great to see you! (Photo above from Rabbi Miller with our Interfaith Solidarity Network team and KITS CD4 Councilmember Nithya Raman). So many people have expressed a desire to take action in meaningful ways, we offer a few ideas and welcome others which you can send to Rabbi Miller:

• Contribute tzedakah/charity to immigrant organizations in your area including:

Our long-time sacred partners CLUE-LA (Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice) who have established a dedicated fund to help pay bond for the release of immigrants detained by ICE. Most of those detained pose no flight risk or have any criminal background but are being held in inhumane conditions, separated from family, under DHS policies that claim the right to detain people without a hearing indefinitely.

CHIRLA (Coalition for Humane ImmigrantsRights in LA), currently running networks to warn people of and document ICE raids, and inform vulnerable communities of their rights;

HIAS (originally established as the Hebrew Immigrant Aid Society) which now offers aid and helps resettlement to refugees and immigrants around the world from every background and religion.

• Volunteer at a local food bank, perhaps like The Los Angeles Food Bank

• Place a banana on your seder plate, a practice that began in loving memory of 2-year-old Aylan Kurdi, who drowned seeking safety as a Syrian refugee, the image of which, once seen, will never leave you . The banana now symbolizes the plight of all those who have been displaced from their homes. Commemorate Aylan and start a discussion around the topic of children growing up in refugee camps, and those children who have died in ICE detention in the U.S.

• Post on your social media about Jewish poet Emma Lazarus's poem, "Give us your tired, your poor, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free," immortalized over 100 years ago on the Statue of Liberty and how we are failing to honor its pledge

• Urge your representatives in Congress to write and fight for generous comprehensive immigration legislation which would enable people seeking a better life to find shelter and a welcome home in the U.S., remembering the doors that were too often shut to Jews seeking refuge here from pogroms and the Holocaust. Every time a politician talks about the problem of our declining population, respond with a letter to the editor, pointing out the hypocrisy -- that we could easily increase our population by granting citizenship to immigrants currently here and welcoming more of them.

HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO WORK IN COALITION, EVEN WHEN WE ARE IN DISAGREEMENT?

In 2024 & 2025, a Black/Jewish/Black & Jewish cohort called "Bridging Histories" gathered monthly at the Skirball Center to break bread together and grapple with the state of our coalition.

One of the richest discoveries that was made during our time together was the importance of The Bradley Coalition in our local history - the strong Black/Jewish alliance that voted Bradley in as mayor, and how that coalition ultimately dissolved. In a time where the Middle East continues to drive a wedge through vital alliance spaces, we see the study of this coalition as a way for us to identify and alchemize the learnings of the solidarity spaces that came before us. Our goal is to find new ways into the question: How do we continue to work in coalition, even when we are in disagreement?

Save the date: Sunday May 17th 2pm-4pm PT in-person for the first of four community gatherings to hear from those who were on the ground during that time.

There are many of us here in Los Angeles who have been leaning into one another, engaging in courageous conversations centered in curiosity and hope. Let’s all gather for this offering, so we can see and feel our numbers while we learn together.

You do not have to be Black or Jewish (or both) to engage with this conversation. This is open to the public and is relevant to anyone curious about coalition building, so please feel free to forward to anyone in your life who is craving community around this subject (though no posting on socials please).  Let Rabbi Miller if you're interested in joining at rabbimiller@keepingitsacred.com.

HEALING CIRCLE & TALMUD TEXT STUDY EVERY THURSDAY

JOIN our healing circle EVERY THURSDAY at 10:30am PT/1:30pm ET holding space for all looking for prayers for healing.

Immediately following that: at 11am PT/2pm ET, join us as we jump into a conversation with the rabbinic sages of old. We enjoy studying a page of Talmud every day and reviewing together every Thursday, adding our perspectives and the relevance to our own lives as we go along. We enjoy participation from participants across the world who span the spectrum of race, gender, class, age, and connection to Jewish thought.

The rabbis could never have imagined such a wonderful group considering their thoughts!

What people say:

"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"

"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."

"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."

"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."

"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."
