Shabbat in LA

Newsletter March 24th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

This past weekend, my cousins were visiting from out of town. Accordingly, Melissa and I planned a solid itinerary of Los Angeles' iconic visitor spots. Santa Monica, TCL Theatre, The Grove, Malibu's Zuma Beach, the California Science Center, the Hollywood sign, and more. And the food spots! Deeelish.

The best part? Our kids were most excited about a ton of quality time together. Time to play in a tent we put up in the backyard. Time to play Rummikub at the dining room table or to shoot some hoops or play corn hole together. Time to explore our backyard cliff, or share old stories about our GrandDad.

LA has much to offer, but there is much to be said about spending quality time together as a family. Without distractions or even LA's finest attractions.

This past extended weekend we got to experience the power of Shabbat. A time to turn inward and appreciate the human family members we are on the planet with right here, right now. A time to get to know the unique configuration of vibrant, pensive, quirky, and silly people we call family. And this practice is a joy in any configuration-- family, friends, chosen family. There is a sweet joy of appreciating the human experience of each.

So, while we are ingesting the constant ticker tape of endless (bad) news cycles, figuring out what to wear because the weather is changing, or doing the work we need to do to earn our keep on this planet (like taking out the trash, getting our mail, responding to bills, etc.) during the week, it is important to remember the deep joy of living with a deep sense of noticing the people and world around us on Shabbat.

Max Winer and I will lead services, but we will take some time to get to know one another-- each of you, each of us, in this beautiful community are an entire world.
