Newsletter March 16th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...
Yesterday, I spent the night at the home of my high school best friend, Maayan. Earlier that day, her 2 year old daughter had learned how to swim, and I was the one who got to tell her how awesome of a swimmer her mom is-- I personally saw her swim across the San Francisco Bay in 2019. When I showed her the picture above, her eyes widened.
My heart jumps when I see this picture, too. I feel the pang of fear that swept over me the day Maayan told me she would do this. My fear was mainly about safety due to the folklore that these waters are infested with sharks. And because, my best friend was going to swim without the protection of chain mail. But she was determined. And so, back then, I dutifully drove to San Francisco to watch her accomplish her mission. I was utterly relieved to present her with a lei of flowers upon her arrival on shore.
Nowadays, I imagine the fear flows from her to me, her friend who serves as a rabbi in 2026. A notoriously fraught profession, with the history of antisemitism aimed at our Jewish community and leaders, with many instances of violent outbursts at our people every day.
Today began the first full day of the 4 day long gathering of Reform rabbis known as the Central Conference of American Rabbis convention. Our community of 400 rabbis from around the world learned with and from Dr. Pamela Nadell about the dark history of antisemitism in the United States, from colonial days to today. We learned about awful comments made by Peter Stuyvesant, the lynching of Leo Frank, the Tree of Life massacre. And as we were learning, I was seated two rows behind my colleague, Rabbi Charlie Cytron-Walker, who had been among those taken hostage in his congregation of Coleyville, TX, by an armed gunman motivated by antisemitism. Rabbi Cytron-Walker and his congregants escaped when he threw a chair at the assailant and running through a nearby exit door.
No one was physically injured. But in a sense, all of us are injured. Especially after this past week where there were more antisemitic incidents than days in the week. We are all swimming in shark-infested waters, as it were.
I know you, dear reader, may be wondering about sharing your last name in certain spaces or considering what language you speak in public. Questioning, perhaps, the display of the mezuzah on your doorpost or the star of David around your neck. We are each negotiating the fear and trying to still keep moving forward.
We remember that, in the late 18th century, Rabbi Chaim Nachman of Breslov said, "The whole world is a narrow bridge, and the point is not to be afraid.”
I see that we all keep stepping across that narrow bridge. We all keep paddling forward even knowing there are sharks in the water. Doing so with the encouragement of one another is how we will get through; that is how we will keep it sacred.

IN LOVING MEMORY OF MARLENE MAE HART
The entire Keeping It Sacred community extends sincerest empathies to the family of Marlene Mae Hart, z”l, affectionately known as “M.” She was a matriarch who lived her whole life in Los Angeles in Boyle Heights, Monrovia, Tarzana, and Granada Hills. M loved fashion, rollerskating, candies, and soda pop. And, she was lovingly surrounded by her progeny, Sarina, Dani and Alli in her final days. At that tender time, each appreciated her recounting of her life and the wisdom she shared including how to stay positive through any hardship, to believe in yourself and your capabilities, and to incorporate a little mischief into life. And each offered up copious “I love you”s in words and compassionate deeds until she breathed her last. Rabbi Miller helped lead the family into mourning and officiated the memorial service last week. M’s memory is an abiding blessing.
BLESSINGS ON A NEW CHAPTER TO KIM, STACY, SETH AND LENNA
Rabbi Miller recently led another very special ritual for Kim, Stacy, Lenna and Seth. The first was at Kim & Stacy’s magnificent wedding at Hotel La Perla in 2024, bonding the four as a family. This week, began their farewells to their precious home in Los Angeles to make a move north to Canada.
Kim moved to LA when she was 23 and made a beautiful life there with dear friends, meaningful work, impactful service to community, and a deep appreciation of all that LA has to offer. LA will always be a place of love and a place where Seth and Lenna, she and Stacy became family. Stacy, Seth and Lenna loved especially experiencing LA through Kim’s eyes and forming their own special bond with the region. There is so much deep appreciation there. And all wholly welcome the new chapter of settled family life in their new home.
The entire global Keeping It Sacred community wishes them every blessing for great things in this next chapter. And we are so blessed to continue to remain connected in our digital platform and each year when they visit.

Our daughter Anna was born with a severe heart defect and received a heart transplant at 6 months old. Thanks to the incredible care she received at CHLA, she's now a happy, thriving toddler. It argues that AI systems are built on incomplete or biased data which exacerbates the marginalization of folks.

HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO WORK IN COALITION, EVEN WHEN WE ARE IN DISAGREEMENT?
In 2024 & 2025, a Black/Jewish/Black & Jewish cohort called "Bridging Histories" gathered monthly at the Skirball Center to break bread together and grapple with the state of our coalition.
One of the richest discoveries that was made during our time together was the importance of The Bradley Coalition in our local history - the strong Black/Jewish alliance that voted Bradley in as mayor, and how that coalition ultimately dissolved. In a time where the Middle East continues to drive a wedge through vital alliance spaces, we see the study of this coalition as a way for us to identify and alchemize the learnings of the solidarity spaces that came before us. Our goal is to find new ways into the question: How do we continue to work in coalition, even when we are in disagreement?
Save the date: Sunday May 17th 2pm-4pm PT in-person for the first of four community gatherings to hear from those who were on the ground during that time.
There are many of us here in Los Angeles who have been leaning into one another, engaging in courageous conversations centered in curiosity and hope. Let’s all gather for this offering, so we can see and feel our numbers while we learn together.
You do not have to be Black or Jewish (or both) to engage with this conversation. This is open to the public and is relevant to anyone curious about coalition building, so please feel free to forward to anyone in your life who is craving community around this subject (though no posting on socials please). 5:30-6:30pm PT/8:30-9:30pm ET: Give yourself the gift of space to reflect and rejuvenate in community with monthly Shabbat Services. Rabbi Miller and Max Winer will lead the community with Jewish thought and sacred song every month. Rabbi Miller is our rabbi! And, Max Winer is a storyteller, song leader, and musician who uses these creative expressions to help create community, facilitate learning, and inspire a love of Judaism.
4/19 CREATIVITY CLUB
Enjoy a chance to hang out with other Keeping It Sacred community members, get to know each other better, and create. Bring your favorite form of creativity to work on, Art, Baking, Craft, Dance, etc. and share inspiration. Some weeks will include someone teaching how to do a project/technique, other weeks will be purely socializing while we do our own things.
