Newsletter March 23rd, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...
As a descendant of Aaron Burr, yes the guy who tied with Thomas Jefferson for the presidency before Alexander Hamilton smeared his name and the house elected Jefferson; not to mention that incident at Weekawken, NJ), reluctantly I watched Hamilton (the play). And there’s that really catchy song, “The Room Where It Happens,” all about the importance of being there, participant in history.
Many times in my life, I have been a witness, or even participant, in history: certainly huge milestones in the lives of the families for whom I officiate namings, bar mitzvah’s, weddings and funerals. I was also appointed commissioner of the first ever Civilian Oversight Commission monitoring the Los Angeles Sheriff's Department. And I worked for a living wage for hotel workers and car wash workers many times, helping them secure new contracts, ever closer to a living wage.
Then, last month, Melissa and were in the room where it happened— on Wheel of Fortune— where the first lesbian couple ever to appear on the show together as contestants won a car in the final round! Melissa and I were chosen as alternates, so we didn’t get to compete-- but we met and cheered on everyone who learns the show rules, spun the wheel (yes we do that, too!) and taped over the course of two days. To witness queer history being made on a popular show that I have watched with four generations of my family (yes ever since the time when the winners would buy prizes after each puzzle), that was really special. And to know that Melissa and I were considered to be part of history in the way was amazing. A huge congratulations to Liz and Emma for both winning the Mustang, and for winning the hearts of a global audience. And to think we were in the room where it happened, cheering them on, participating in history!
This past week, I was also in the room when the WRN Executive Director, Rabbi Mary Zamore, shared space, an a podium, with the incoming Executive Director, Rabbi RVT. I felt professional pride knowing that I served on the search committee with 7 other colleagues to name the new ED. My work with the current ED was impactful, and I got to support her work prophetically leading our organization through the reckoning of the #metoo movement. What a momentous occasion.
Last night I was asked to lead a pre-Passover Seder for the Jewish Partnership for Los Angeles (JPLA). The Haggadah outlines 13 steps in the seder-- it’s a lot! And frankly, it can be overwhelming. The sages wanted us all to feel what that journey was like. In fact, they say that the only obligation is for participants to personally feel as if you have made the journey from oppression to freedom. Essentially, they want you to feel like you are in the room (or desert) where it happened! Kudos to them for knowing that there is something so incredible to feel like you are part of history. The tales of the past are not so far away and you feel transformed by the experience.
The sages wanted us all to feel what that journey was like to appreciate the great gift of freedom and to yearn for it for those around us. That is the point of the Passover rituals.
This Passover season, and always, may we each feel as if we, too, were in the room where it happened and that we had a hand in bringing about lasting change for the better. This is how we’re #keepingitsacred.

MAZAL TOV CASEY
The entire global Keeping It Sacred community extends a hearty Mazal Tov to our beloved member Casey on the occasion of their b* mitzvah. They travelled to New York City to ascend the Bimah at Congregation Beth Simchat Torah (CBST). They chanted beautifully from the 35th chapter of Exodus and then delivered a scintillating drash about the relationship to the instructions for building the Mishkan to the instructions for medical care for anyone with chronic illness. Casey also shared how important intentionally welcoming spaces, including queer spaces, are to the participation of all. Casey, we are lit up by their brilliant sharing of Torah! Mazal tov to Casey- you are an abiding blessing!
CENTRAL CONFERENCE OF AMERICAN RABBIS' 137th CONVENTION
This past week, our own Rabbi Miller joined 400 Reform Rabbis for the 137th Central Conference of American Rabbis (CCAR) Convention in San Francisco, CA. The highlight was meeting our KITS Member, Dale, in person! But also to join with her rabbinic classmates each nearing 18 years in the rabbinate, attending the Queer Jewish History Walking Tour of the Castro (yes, they even stopped by the location of Harvey Milk's Camera shop), and having dinner with the Women's Rabbinic Network. Discussions centered around the American experience of Antisemitism, Israeli colleagues' work for shared society, Queering rituals including hatafat dam brit and b'mitzvah, and honoring our beloved teacher, Rabbi Dr. Andrea Weiss, z"l. Everywhere she went, Rabbi Miller shared the cutting-edge work we are doing right here at Keeping It Sacred, all with love, nerdiness, and tenderheartedness.
DREAMING LOST BODIES BACK
Longtime friend and supporter of the Keeping It Sacred community, Professor Najeeba Syeed, has a new book out from WIPF and Stock Publishers. Rabbi Miller shares,

JEWISH PARTNERSHIP FOR LOS ANGELES MOVEMENT SEDER
Last night, our own Rabbi Miller was asked to lead a Passover seder for the Los Angeles progressive community. Jews and non-Jews alike, citizens and civic leaders, and those who put their lives on the line working for justice, joined together for a seder affirming the importance of solidarity in the work. The program was put together by the Jewish Partnership for Los Angeles and held at the Wende Museum. It was an evening of inspiration and commitment to continuing our sacred charge to work to liberate ourselves from pharaohs.

A Poem for Passover 2026

This is a season of questions
some big, some small
some we’ve been asking ourselves for centuries,
millennia even.
And some just come up
day to day.
This question I invite you
to contemplate in your heart
is as simple and profound
as you allow it to be:
What kind of Jew am I?
For we are all one people
with a common ancestry
spread across nations,
from generation to generation,
as we remind ourselves
again and again.
But in our shared history,
we celebrate diversity
of thought, of culture, of practice.
And every iteration
of what it means to be Jewish
keeps Judaism alive
and thriving in its variety.
We don’t always agree—
Show me a Jew who always agrees
and I’ll show you someone
who’s lying about something—
But we can and must concede
to see the common thread
that unites us in our difference.
That is why we gather
on nights like this
to tell our story of liberation,
of surviving plagues
and persecution,
to step out on faith
and follow one another
through the desert.
What kind of Jew am I?
To turn my eyes from suffering,
to allow, in my silence,
for encampments?
What kind of Jew am I
to see people driven from their homes
and say nothing?
What kind of Jew am I
to defend my rights
and not another’s?
To witness the loss
of firstborn sons and daughters?
To see any child and think
they are somehow
worth less?
Once a year, we ask forgiveness,
for the ways we’ve failed
to live up to the challenge
of loving our neighbor.
But daily may we be reminded
of the opportunity
to ask ourselves:
What kind of Jew am I?
Am I a Jew who embraces
a legacy of fighting for freedom?
Am I a Jew who remembers
the sacred duty of rest?
Am I a Jew who rejoices
in the lighting of candles,
the sharing of stories,
and food,
and spirit?
Can I be the kind of Jew
who feels capable
of persevering
when the odds seem stacked
and the leverage feels light?
A Jew who lifts burdens
who turns curses into blessings
like Ma Tovu
words we recite each morning
from one set out to slander us
who could only speak of our beauty?
As Jews we surround ourselves
with reminders of reminders
because somewhere down the line
between a golden calf
and a pillar of fire
we realized collectively
how easy it is to forget
who we are,
what we stand for,
and how, in fact, we pray.
Because asking is prayer,
not just of God
but of ourselves.
Jacob was called Israel
because he wrestled the angel
and demanded to be blessed.
So are we,
descendants of Jacob,
children of Rachel and Leah,
destined to wrestle
with the great questions of our time.
The best blessing
we can hope for—
the most righteous demand—
is to be able to answer
with intention and care
that the kind of Jew
you’ve come to be
is the one who knows
their Jewishness
from within,
and who is learning
day by day,
through remembrance and reflection,
to live that kind of Judaism
out in the world
as you keep it
alive
in your heart.

Happy almost Passover! Fresh off all of the GRAMMY excitement around Grammy winning artist Joanie Leeds, we share news that she has a new single out about Passover! “My Seder Plate” is out TODAY! Joanie had the joy of debuting My Seder Plate on Ms. Sara’s Passover episode last year and it was such a hit at concerts and the nursery schools that she professionally recorded it.
Also, her new mindfulness, children’s picture book, Breathe Deep, was published last month and its 1st reading was at the PJ Library Book Festival at the 92Y! Breathe Deep is now available in most places where books are sold.

NO KINGS PROTESTS
Join members of our KITS SAIL (Social Action in LA Club) for the March 28 No Kings Protests -- in Various Locations
On Saturday, March 28, please join us for the No Kings Protests being held in multiple locations around town. Consistent with the Jewish command to seek justice, confer mercy, and walk humbly in the eyes of God, these are peaceful people-led demonstrations designed:
• to stand up for core American principles of due process, free speech, religious freedom, equal justice, and the rule of law
• to stand with our neighbors of all backgrounds to let them know we believe in the American mosaic embodied by "e pluribus unum" -- out of many, we are one
• to stand down those who urge cruelty, use violence, de-humanize others, or "merely" comply with policies that strip people of their livelihoods, their homes, their medical care, their human dignity.
Signs welcome but not necessary. Bring water and some joy, and wear sunscreen.

Our family knows firsthand that Children's Hospital Los Angeles is a place where miracles happen. Our daughter Anna was born with a severe heart defect and received a heart transplant at 6 months old. Thanks to the incredible care she received at CHLA, she's now a happy, thriving toddler. CHLA makes miracles like Anna's happen every day, and now they need our support more than ever.
CHLA provides comprehensive care for kids from all walks of life, regardless of immigration or insurance status. This month, their annual Make March Matter campaign aims to raise $1 million to support everything they do.

It argues that AI systems are built on incomplete or biased data which exacerbates the marginalization of folks.

This 18-session online program provides a strong foundation in Jewish living, theology, sacred texts, history, holidays, and rituals. It is ideal for spiritual seekers, interfaith couples, individuals considering or pursuing conversion, and Jews who want to reconnect with Judaism as adults.

The first is with her classmates on a tour of fellow classmate Rabbi Reuben Zellman's home congregation, Sha'ar Zahav. There Rabbi Zellman is working on TGX inclusion. The second photo is of Rabbi Miller and a few classmates -- all of us coming up on 18 years in the rabbinate!
HOW DO WE CONTINUE TO WORK IN COALITION, EVEN WHEN WE ARE IN DISAGREEMENT?
In 2024 & 2025, a Black/Jewish/Black & Jewish cohort called "Bridging Histories" gathered monthly at the Skirball Center to break bread together and grapple with the state of our coalition.
One of the richest discoveries that was made during our time together was the importance of The Bradley Coalition in our local history - the strong Black/Jewish alliance that voted Bradley in as mayor, and how that coalition ultimately dissolved. In a time where the Middle East continues to drive a wedge through vital alliance spaces, we see the study of this coalition as a way for us to identify and alchemize the learnings of the solidarity spaces that came before us. Our goal is to find new ways into the question: How do we continue to work in coalition, even when we are in disagreement?
Save the date: Sunday May 17th 2pm-4pm PT in-person for the first of four community gatherings to hear from those who were on the ground during that time.
There are many of us here in Los Angeles who have been leaning into one another, engaging in courageous conversations centered in curiosity and hope. Let’s all gather for this offering, so we can see and feel our numbers while we learn together.
You do not have to be Black or Jewish (or both) to engage with this conversation. This is open to the public and is relevant to anyone curious about coalition building, so please feel free to forward to anyone in your life who is craving community around this subject (though no posting on socials please).
