Newsletter May 18th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...
Houses of worship are meeting places of community; intergenerational spaces to lift up lifes' greatest joys, to mourn the deepest sorrows. They are places to offer gratitude for life itself, and to mark time and the seasons with treasured community. They are also places to explore sacred texts, define values, and encourage one another's purpose in life.
News of a terrifying shooting at a sacred house of worship, the Islamic Center of San Diego, sent chills down our spines as we heard the news yesterday. Three people were senselessly killed, including Amin Abdullah, a security guard and father of eight.
Hate speech was scrawled on the weapons used in the attack by two teenagers, aged 17 and 18, who died of self-inflicted gunshot wounds nearby.
At the nexus of all of this is the abominable ideas about racial and ethnic superiority, Islamophobia, and the proliferation of weapons.
It always irks me when the news says that "no children were injured." Yes, I am glad that their little bodies were not bloodied, but the emotional scars from the violence they witnessed and were around are most certainly harm. The adults, as well, need to be cared for and treated for the trauma of that day.
In the aftermath of these events, it is critical that the interfaith community rally together to stand up for love, peace, and understanding. To counter the hateful rhetoric with clear evidence that people in good faith and of different faiths can get along, and want for one another what they want for themselves; namely, to have safe houses of worship, to have economic opportunities, and a life lived in peace.
I recently saw a bumper sticker that said, "Wage Peace". There was no punctuation. It was not a command. Nor a directive. Just simply a truth put out into the world. Where there is a proliferation of hatred and a war of cultures, the response is to wage peace. According to Joe Kay in an article 10 years ago called "Let Us Wage Peace," in Sojourners magazine, waging peace "is the active, deliberate work of building harmony, requiring as much courage and strategy as waging war."
In the Jewish tradition, this begins with our sacred text itself, the Torah, which is not allowed to be fashioned using any metal whatsoever. Why? The rabbis teach that it is because metal fashions the instruments of war, but the Torah is an instrument of peace. It is time for us, in our generation, to be as active and deliberate as this tradition in considering how and where and what we can do to both encourage peace, and also disengage from the war machine.
I am proud to know that so many of you, our members, work for peace and love and understanding everyday. And, I am confident that you, as do I, will show up whenever and however we can to stand for peace in interfaith solidarity gatherings, to stand up against the rhetoric, and to wage peace.

A MESSSAGE FROM THE KITS SOCIAL ACTION IN LA CLUB
Shavuot, which begins this year at sundown Thursday night, May 21, commemorates the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. Shavuot has never enjoyed the popularity of so many other Jewish holidays. There are so many other holidays--Rosh Hashanah, Yom Kippor, Sukkot, Chanukah, Purim, Passover--whose rituals, music, traditions, stories, and foods are well-known and loved. Not so with Shavuot. There are probably few of us who have engaged in all-night study, re-read the story of Ruth, or even feasted on a dairy foods. How many of us know Shavuot songs?
But this holiday deserves more than a passing nod because, perhaps more than any other, it sets the foundation for Judaism. Without the giving of the Law, being Jewish would be little more than tribalism. It is not our blood or our genes, or even our faith in God, but this Law, as it has been interpreted over millennia by the Prophets and the Sages, and the Rabbis, that has defined us a people. It is our adherence to the notion of the Law that prompts us to repudiate the divine right of kings, to abhor corruption, to renounce those who abuse power and people. It is our belief in the Law that beckons us to a commitment to the Rule of Law -- the ideal that no person is above the law and that all are equal before it. In the modern age, Judaic thought and American principles of democracy have nourished each other.
We are living in unsettling times now, when many in positions of power and wealth scorn the notion of equality before the law and believe that they should be exempt from its constraints. So this year, even if we know no Shavuot melodies and will never make it past midnight, let's celebrate the giving of the Law at Sinai by promoting the concept of a just society and by speaking out against the ways it is daily being undermined, disrespected and disfigured. And maybe we can also treat ourselves to a nice cheese blintz.

WELCOME HOME AUGIE!
The entire Keeping It Sacred community celebrates with a warm welcome the addition of Augustus “Augie” Ezer Gaughan to the family Neil and Debbie who Rabbi Miller married a couple of years ago. Augie is new to the world but has already experienced flight and a plane delay with his papa to arrive home into the loving arms of his mama. The entire community celebrates that sweet sweet face. May he grow well and joyfully!
COUNT THE OMER WITH US!
This is the last week to join our social media platforms: Instagram and Facebook, to follow along with counting the Omer, a tradition that continues for 49 days. The counting of the omer was once a harvest season ritual that was adopted by the Kabbalists who infused a spirituality and intentionality into the practice. Check out our social media daily for seven weeks of seven days of readings, and meditative prompts to spark introspection and spiritual strength. This custom traditionally links the second night of Passover with Shavuot (day 50!). Join us in this spiritual exercise as we climb up from oppression to the celebration of the giving of the Torah.

GORGEOUS NEW JEWISH MUSIC FROM YEDID!

This is coming to us from our interfaith friends at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We have shared our passover seder with them, and now they welcome us to come learn about their newest temple. All are welcome: members of their church, members of the community, and anyone who just wants to see what a temple is about.Once the temple is dedicated, the entrance is reserved for members of the Church.
