Newsletter June 29th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...
At this time of year, my ear worm is Neil Diamond’s “America”:
“Far, We've been traveling farWithout a homeBut not without a starFreeOnly want to be freeWe huddle closeHang on to a dream
On the boats and on the planesThey're coming to AmericaNever looking back againThey're coming to America…”
My family and I would gather yearly to watch our local fireworks show to celebrate America on July 4th, and inevitably this song would provide the soundtrack to the finale.
“ Everywhere around the world
They're coming to AmericaEvery time that flag's unfurledThey're coming to America…. Today!”
On that day, the tens of thousands of attendees in the stadium we were gathered with, along with millions more around the country who were also blasting this song, were celebrating one of the best things America is known for- its commitment to provide opportunity for those seeking it. And we would proudly sing at the top of our lungs “TODAY!” as the great red, white, and blue fireworks would explode in bright colors against the darkness of the night sky.
That’s why the end verse of the song incorporates the pledge of allegiance in a great crescendo, sung loud and proud by
“My country 'tis of theeTodaySweet land of libertyTodayOf thee I singTodayOf thee I singToday!”
As I grew up, I learned about the Jewish commitment to welcoming the stranger (noted in the Torah no less than 36 times), and the celebration of being free (we thank God every day for making us chofshi, people who are free).
Why? Because we know what it was like to face oppression. In much of our people’s history, we know what that is like, and so we hold any opportunity for freedom and opportunity as sacred.
This week, America itself is turning 250 years old. There will be fireworks shows held all over the country, but I wonder, will they still play the song? And if so, will it hit the same way?
This week thousands of Haitian and Syrian immigrants will have their Temporary Protective Status revoked due to a decision the US Supreme Court handed down last week granting the executive branch the power to do so. And the executive branch is now exercising its right to do so. In the wake of this, the week of the semiquincentennial of this country, how can we possibly sing out, “today!” No longer are these immigrants seeking Temporary Protective Status able to come here.
Not only is this particular band of immigrants affected, but so are the industries they work for: healthcare, home aids in nursing homes, and other sectors that need dedicated workers.
The Boston Globe reported that senior vice president of strategy at JVS (the Jewish Vocational Service), Amy Nishman noted,
“This is going to decimate certain industries here in Massachusetts,… In September, we won’t be able to get children to school because there won’t be enough bus drivers.”
The human toll that will result from this power being used and enforced is immeasurable. People are going to be sent back to places that are not safe for them. Family units torn apart along the lines of paperwork. And a deep sense of disappointment for those of us who have grown up grateful for our own family’s ability to pursue opportunity here.
But, ever committed to the value of welcome, we at Keeping It Sacred will continue to work with organizations on the ground working for immigrant rights, like CIPC (California Immigrant Policy Center), NDLON (The National Day Laborer Organizing Network), CHIRLA (the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights in Los Angeles), and others looking to make the song true once again. Together, we are working earnestly to put the “today!” back in to the song.

Not surprisingly, our cherished KITS member, Amy, wrote a note about Independence Day aligned with many of the themes Rabbi Miller outlined above. Here are her words and an ongoing invitation to you to join the KITS SAIL (Social Action in LA) club:
There is a natural resonance between the prophetic promises of Judaism and the ideals expressed in the Declaration of Independence that we celebrate on the Fourth of July. The stories of the kings told in the Torah are not, for the most part, tales of valiant leaders who work for the good of their people, but of highly flawed men who are corrupted by their power, oppress the people they are meant to protect, and lead them into senseless wars. Recognizing the fundamental worth of each human being is a guiding principle of both Judaism and the American experiment in governance -- always imperfectly practiced, sometimes nearly forgotten, by both -- but serving as a guidepost we hope will pull us back when we stray too far.
We are living in troubling times. Just this past week, hundreds of thousands of immigrants lost their temporary protected status in the U.S. and many more lost their right to seek asylum here. Instead, they will be expelled and turned away, sent back to a precarious existence in desperate situations, many subjected to torture, relentless poverty, or imprisonment because of their race, religion, gender, sexual orientation, political views or some other immutable aspect of their being.
For them, and so many others, the July 4th, 1852, speech by Frederick Douglass -- "What To The Slave Is the Fourth of July?"--seems more pertinent than grand proclamations of liberty and justice for all. In that speech, Douglass talked about the great men who composed the Declaration of Independence and praised them for the words they had written, for the sentiment that all people are created equal, and for the nation they claimed to envision. But then he asked what the Founders' words meant to him. And he answers:
Who so obdurate and dead to the claims of gratitude, that would not thankfully acknowledge such priceless benefits? Who so stolid and selfish, that would not give his voice to swell the hallelujahs of a nation’s jubilee, when the chains of servitude had been torn from his limbs? I am not that man. In a case like that, the dumb might eloquently speak, and the 'lame man leap as an hart.'
But such is not the state of the case. I say it with a sad sense of the disparity between us. I am not included within the pale of glorious anniversary! Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you, this day, rejoice, are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity and independence, bequeathed by your fathers, is shared by you, not by me. The sunlight that brought light and healing to you, has brought stripes and death to me. This Fourth July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn.
As we prepare this week to celebrate the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence, let us honor our American and our Jewish ideals by finding ways to extend our "rich inheritance of justice, liberty, and prosperity" to all those who dwell among us, so that everyone can feel the sunlight that brings light and healing.
Teaching and talking about these principles is one way to reaffirm them.
