ReTREAT YOURSELF!

Newsletter June 8th, 2025 Together, we're #keepingitsacred...

This past weekend, I attended the “ReTREAT Yourself!” gathering hosted by Adamah. This shabbaton was funded by generous donors inviting Jewish professionals to attend, for free, a weekend of self care. I wasn’t sure what to expect, but I knew I needed to go.
Fifty Jewish professionals from every sector arrived at Camp Ramah in Ojai, CA ready for some respite from the unique pressures of working as professional Jews: holding the worries and heartaches of the people, responsible for visioning the future, and keeping the enterprise going in a way that is vibrant and alive. In big meetings and quiet moments, throughout the retreat, we spoke of the great blessing it is to serve our people, and about the work that energizes us and motivates us. I spoke so highly of you, dear KITS community, that there are already connections and partnership opportunities in the works (stay tuned).
Our souls were nourished by deep text study and movement work, song and prayer sessions, nature walks, campfire s’mores, a sound bath. And, of course because we were in the stunning setting of the magical mountains of Ojai, and with the dynamic organization called Adamah (check them out, we will soon formally partner with them!), we were treated to a hefty helping of communing with nature, and paying special attention to the trees. On walks, we learned to honor each tree we encountered as the beautiful individual life force it was uniquely. It was very connecting and humbling. And to do this on a campus with millions of trees, including whole orange orchards, was profound.
It reminded me of the famous story in the Talmud, from 1,800 years ago, where four rabbis entered an orchard, a metaphor for deep Torah study. The story relates that from the experience that Ben Azzai died, Ben Zoma lost his sanity, Elisha ben Abuyah came out a heretic, but Rabbi Akiva entered and departed in peace.
It is quite an enigmatic story and so ever since learning of this story in 34 years ago, I wondered what would happen to me if I entered an orchard. Being on campus with a literal orange orchard, I took my camping chair and book of Torah to study, entered and sat. I was not sure of what I would find. But, what came to me amidst Torah study was just a pure and intense sense of gratitude. And a million thoughts, big and small, came to me—interactions and encounters with people. Appreciation for the science behind the sacred design of the universe. Gratitude for human ingenuity and the wonders of being alive. Gratitude for family and community and each of you.
Taking some time to get in touch with nature and that sense of gratitude was incredibly fortifying, satisfying, and transformative. Others on the ReTreat felt it, too. On the last day, we sat in a circle and jammed out a simple phrase shared by one of the organizers: “I will believe the truth about myself no matter how beautiful it is.” (Hear the recording HERE).
If you ever needed a personal dose of nourishment, please enjoy it. As I sang, I thought of my human need for affirmation as a kind of permission to live life fully. And I realized, through the retreat, what a gift it is when we can give one another, and ourselves, the permission to live fully into our essence.
I thought of how I want for each of you to know that among the purest prayers I have is for each of you to know and believe how beautiful the truth of your life is. And to give yourself permission to live your lives fully. My hope is that we continue to cultivate spaces for ourselves and one another to live fully into our lies and gifts each day, every day, and with every breath.
What a treat it was to take time for the mind, body, heart & soul to reground ourselves in the essence of purpose. Feeling the depth of these moments is how we’re keeping it sacred.

KITS SAIL CLUB INFORMATION ABOU TTHE 17 SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT GOALS AND A CALL TO ACTION

Last week, our column about the Sustainable Development Goals began with a brief history of the goals (which are pictured above). Because of a glitch, that part of the column got cut off. Here it is:
From last week: On September 15, 2015, the 193 members of the United Nations, including the United States, voted unanimously to adopt a set of 17 sustainable development goals(SVGs) to be achieved by 2030 -- goals that would be reflected in and serve as guideposts for their domestic policies and international relationships. Every member country agreed, pronouncing: "We can be the first generation to succeed in ending poverty; just as we may be the last to have a chance of saving the planet."
Unfortunately, in March, 2025, the United States changed its position on the goals, rejecting and renouncing them, claiming that Americans neither want nor need them.
As it happens, Goal 2: End hunger, achieve food security and improved nutrition and promote sustainable agriculture; Goal 3: Ensure healthy lives and promote well-being for all at all ages, and Goal 16 -- Promote peaceful and inclusive societies for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable institutions at all levels --proved especially relevant this past week.
Consider what Rabbi Miller reports from her activities this past week:
I spoke at a Town Hall meeting organized by the California Immigrant Policy Center at the NEW Economics for Women Family Resource Center, to address budget matters of acute relevance to the immigrant community in these days of hostility towards it by the federal government.
Working in partnership with the Coalition for Humane Immigrant Rights- Los Angeles (CHIRLA), the Town Hall Meeting raised issues for the Budget Committee to consider as it puts together recommendations for the overall California budget this week. Of great concern, cuts from the federal government will affect Californians, in general, and the immigrant community, in particular-- 2M people set to lose MediCal, 3M set to lose CAP Fresh benefits, and 200k refugees, asylum seekers and others set to lose legal services -- in unimaginably harsh ways.
Budgets are moral documents; they reveal the priorities we hold. Assemblymember Jesse Gabriel, who represents the area for the zip code 91043 where KITS is headquartered, is the head of the budget committee.
As such, we have a special opportunity to let him know how we feel about the policies the budget committee is considering, stressing the importance of funding health care, food access and legal services for the immigrant community. His office phone number is: 818-380-2460. Please call TODAY to ask him to support immigrant community programs including funding MediCal, food programs, and legal services, and let him know that organizing against ICE is not enough. We need to also fund programs that support the community especially as he holds leadership in the Budget Committee and the vote is looming next week. (Our KITS Zip Code is 91403)
We may share the story of Rebecca, whose healthcare is about to be impacted and she will be forced to choose between that and putting food on her plate. Or the story of Sarah whose son told her not to go to work anymore because he is afraid she will be taken away and not have legal representation. Or the story of *Rachel who will lose CalFresh benefits and cannot add any more part time jobs to her plate.
In Jewish law, every person is a precious reflection of the creator, and their lives and those of millions more immigrants are infinitely precious. And our tradition teaches, 36 times in the Torah, to welcome the stranger. It would be cruel and immoral to defund healthcare, food programs and legal services that mean the difference between life and death for this vulnerable community.
You can make a difference this week, let’s do that together!
Also, Saturday afternoon, June 13, you are all invited to join the Commission on Voluntary Service & Action in raising the demand for these goals to be implemented "so that all people can live in dignity, free of poverty and in a healthy, sustainable environment," while celebrating CVSA's 80th year. 2-4:30 p.m., Riddick Youth Center, 2614 Overland Avenue, Los Angeles. RSVP - (323) 933-2872. Suggested donation $20/individual, $50/group of 3 or more. Late lunch smorgasbord, live entertainment, and presentations from volunteer leaders working towards Sustainability Goals.
And, please join us in a Weekly Prayer Vigil for Those Who have been Disappeared by I.C.E. on Tuesday, June 16th and every Tuesday at 12pm-1pm at the Los Angeles Federal Building at 300 N Los Angeles St, Los Angeles, CA 90012.
This one is a special PRIDE Month edition with members of the LA Queer Interfaith Clergy council leading.

What people say:
"Yesterday's class was superb!! I remain impressed by so many things that you do! You are able to keep us on track, share (some of) your knowledge with us, make all sorts of connections to the Jewish and secular worlds, and meet each of us where we are! Kudos to you!!"
"Talmud study has opened a window to that world for me. I love the anthropology and sociology of it all."
"The minority opinions may someday count as much as the majority opinions. It reminds us that things change the Halacha changes and we change each year that we read it."
"We have the opportunity to compare the Halacha we are practicing today with the one they were writing and studying in the Talmud... It has been very interesting how things have evolved how we keep the tradition in our own way."
"I feel very close to this amazing group and I'm grateful to Rabbi Miller for conducting it."
